#218: bellwether

whether to or fro
the bellwether leads us now
like guessing weather
Picture
The [literal] bellwether is the sheep who leads the flock: "bell" you know what that ringy-dingy is; "whether" is a castrated ram... that wears a bell.

So a bellwether company would be a company trending or leading the way. Until the next perfect storm comes along.

A visionary company is the one that blindsides the bellwether company and disrupts the heck out of it. Then that company becomes a bellwether.

And the cycle continues. The difference now is this cycle is accelerating!

DEFINITION of this 3-syllable noun:
  • a person or thing that shows the existence or direction of a trend; index.
  • a wether or other male sheep that leads the flock, usually bearing a bell.
  • a person or thing that assumes the leadership or forefront, as of a profession or industry:

Paris is a bellwether of the fashion industry.

The Word of the Day comes from Dictionary.com. Use the word in your own haiku and add to the comments.

Improve your vocabulary and your haiku skills at the same time! If you don't know the definition, it's below, but see if you can figure it out from the haiku and/or image.

Poet and designer, David Alan Foster has been experimenting with haiku since the '70s. He has inspired (or possibly offended) many with said experiments.
