That's not Drew at left. Don't remember ever seeing him birling.

That's him on the right with his buddy Ira, back in his logging sports days!

#112: anomia

the joyous grandam
was glowing of countenance
despite anomia
Picture
Do you ever see a person, wish you could talk to them... get to know them a little better... just because they look so interesting?

I have no idea who this woman is, but she expresses grace, confidence, wisdom, peace... beauty.

#110: minimax

his minimax freed
from maximum gambling greed
and minimum heed
Picture
Seems most people who gamble [in casinos] have zero strategy beyond quitting after losing a pre-determined amount of money. Quitting after winning a certain amount of money would be a better strategy... but almost never happens for most people.

I think of Las Vegas as "Disneyland on the Dark Side." I'm quite certain the planners and designers of casinos spend a lot of time at Disneyland, taking copious notes, with the intent of making Las Vegas "family friendly"...
We live in a strange world.

DEFINITION of this 3-syllable noun:
  1. a strategy of game theory employed to minimize a player's maximum possible loss.

#109: galumph

Comments

a baleful galumph
onomatopoetic
peg-leg, great girth, hump
Picture
This game character model represented the word "galumph" for this day's haiku very well I thought. It's a pirate ork from one of the many RPG games in that universe.

Players are increasingly able to render their favorite characters and get them produced on a 3D printer, which they can then paint.

This kind of product is turning the merchandising world on its head.

DEFINITION of this 2-syllable verb:
  1. to move along heavily and clumsily.

#108: donnybrook

one innocent look

sparked this donnybrook
Picture
Not a big fight fan, but I think my all-time favorite fight scene is this donnybrook in The Quiet Man with John Wayne and a wonderful cast of characters. Good film all-around.

DEFINITION of this 3-syllable noun:
  1. (often initial capital letter) an inordinately wild fight or contentious dispute; brawl; free-for-all

This is a most fantastical photo... don't know if it's a composite or manipulated, but it perfectly captures the spirit of Arctic nights and sunny Florida days. If this was a single-shot photo, I want to go there!

DEFINITION of this 3-syllable adjective:
  1. Pathology. pertaining to, of the nature of, or affected with scurvy.
